To increase the trespass!

Rom 5:20 ESV2011 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
Now those words “to increase the trespass” . . may seem a bit shocking!
In a Bible Study I said that I think Paul meant that sin would actually increase after the law was given. Another was shocked, and said that it meant that it would seem like an increase in sin because now they would have the Law to tell them what was sin.
A little background –
Rom 5:17 ESV2011 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Rom 5:18 ESV2011 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.
Rom 5:19 ESV2011 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Rom 5:20 ESV2011 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
Sin and death (physical and spiritual) entered through one man – Adam – to ALL of us! Now even more so, the free gift of righteousness rules in our lives through one man – Jesus Christ.
Then Paul says the Law (of Moses) entered “to increase the trespass”! Hmm . .
Well . . .
Paul talks about these things some more in Romans 7 –
Rom 7:7 ESV2011 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
Rom 7:8 ESV2011 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead.
That “covetousness” in vs. 8 = a lust for what is forbidden per MStrongs.
So I think the ISV “all kinds of sinful desires” seems better.
Rom 7:8 ISV But sin seized the opportunity provided by this commandment and produced in me all kinds of sinful desires, since apart from the Law, sin is dead.
So Paul says that with the Law, the sin in him uses that law to seize an opportunity and produces “all kinds of sinful desires” ISV!
Now that certainly sounds to me like Paul’s sinful nature sees the Law saying Don’t do this! And of course, he goes ahead and Does it . . a whole bunch!
Rom 7:9 ESV2011 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.
Rom 7:10 ESV2011 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.
Rom 7:11 ESV2011 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
And in verse 9 Paul says that sinfulness sees the Law and just comes alive!
So it seems to me that Paul is saying that the sin does increase because our sinful natures naturally do what we’re commanded not to do!

Hola amigos! Aquí tienes un pensamiento bíblico para ti.
Rom 5:20 RVG10 Y la ley entró para que el pecado abundase; pero cuando el pecado abundó, sobreabundó la gracia;
Ahora bien, esas palabras «para que la transgresión aumentara»… ¡pueden parecer un tanto impactantes!
En un estudio bíblico comenté que, a mi parecer, Pablo quería decir que el pecado realmente aumentaría después de que se diera la Ley. Otra persona se sorprendió y dijo que aquello significaba que *parecería* haber un aumento del pecado, ya que ahora contarían con la Ley para señalarles qué era pecado.
Un poco de contexto…
Rom 5:17 RVG10 Porque si por un pecado reinó la muerte, por uno; mucho más los que reciben la gracia abundante y el don de la justicia reinarán en vida por uno, Jesucristo.
Rom 5:18 RVG10 Así que, como por el pecado de uno vino la condenación a todos los hombres, así también, por la justicia de uno, vino la gracia a todos los hombres para justificación de vida.
Rom 5:19 RVG10 Porque como por la desobediencia de un hombre muchos fueron constituidos pecadores, así también por la obediencia de uno, muchos serán constituidos justos.
Rom 5:20 RVG10 Y la ley entró para que el pecado abundase; pero cuando el pecado abundó, sobreabundó la gracia;
¡El pecado y la muerte (física y espiritual) entraron por medio de un solo hombre —Adán— y llegaron a TODOS nosotros! Ahora, con mayor razón, el don gratuito de la justicia reina en nuestras vidas por medio de un solo hombre: Jesucristo.
Luego, Pablo dice que la Ley (de Moisés) entró «para que el pecado abundase». Mmm…
Bueno…
Pablo profundiza más en estos temas en Romanos 7…
Rom 7:7 RVG10 ¿Qué diremos entonces? ¿Es pecado la ley? ¡En ninguna manera! Al contrario, yo no hubiera conocido el pecado a no ser por la ley: Porque no conociera la codicia si la ley no dijera: No codiciarás.
Rom 7:8 RVG10 Pero el pecado, tomando ocasión por el mandamiento, produjo en mí toda codicia. Porque sin la ley el pecado estaba muerto.
Esa «toda codicia» en v.8 equivale a un deseo ardiente por lo prohibido, según MStrongs. Por eso, me parece más acertada la traducción de la PDT Palabra de Dios para Todas: «toda clase de malos deseos».
Rom 7:8 PDT El pecado se aprovechó de la ley, usando en mi contra ese mandamiento para despertar en mí toda clase de malos deseos, pues el pecado no tiene poder cuando no hay ley.
Así que Pablo dice que, con la Ley, el pecado que habita en él se vale de ella para aprovechar la oportunidad y producir «toda clase de malos deseos» PDT.
Esto, ciertamente, me suena a que la naturaleza pecaminosa de Pablo ve que la Ley dice: «¡No hagas esto!», y, por supuesto, él va y lo hace… ¡y lo hace muchísimo!
Rom 7:9 RVG10 Y antes yo vivía sin ley, pero cuando vino el mandamiento, el pecado revivió y yo morí.
Rom 7:10 RVG10 Y el mandamiento que era para vida, yo encontré que era para muerte.
Rom 7:11 RVG10 Porque el pecado, tomando ocasión por el mandamiento, me engañó, y por él me mató.
¡Y en el versículo 9, Pablo dice que la naturaleza pecaminosa ve la Ley y simplemente cobra vida!
¡Así que me parece que Pablo está diciendo que el pecado aumenta porque nuestras naturalezas pecaminosas hacen, por propia inclinación, aquello que se nos ordena no hacer!
