Jesus Perfects Us!

Be Perfect! Don’t walk in the flesh! Now how can we do that?

Matt 5:48 ESV2011 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Rom 8:1 AKJV/PCE There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Rom 8:8 AKJV/PCE So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

We’ve all heard this in the Church. Hellfire and Brimstone preaching! Not anything really practical. No ideas about how God accepts us and helps us throughout our life. Not any encouragement. Not much grace and peace.

I have read and heard of other ministers who knew this feeling of never being a good enough Christian. Never holy enough. Always in fear of going to hell after all.

But over the years I have noticed a few things in my Bible Studies.

The early Christians weren’t perfect either! They were far from it!

Paul had to teach them to stop these persistent sins in their lives.

But they were still considered Christians!

1Cor 3:3 ESV2011 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?

A Christian. But still in the flesh.

Eph 5:3 ESV2011 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.

Eph 5:4 ESV2011 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

Eph 5:8 ESV2011 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

These Saints – Christians needed to stop this immorality.

They needed to walk like Christians who are in the Light of God!

Col 3:5 ESV2011 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Col 3:6 ESV2011 On account of these the wrath of God is coming.

Col 3:7 ESV2011 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.

Col 3:8 ESV2011 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

Col 3:9 ESV2011 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices

Notice that Paul says they once walked in these sins meaning they used to be unsaved living this way naturally. Not trying to stop. They didn’t really know any better. But now they are Christians. So they need to learn to stop doing these things. And that stopping didn’t come easy for them! And it won’t be easy for us!

1Thess 4:3 ESV2011 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;

1Thess 4:4 ESV2011 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor,

1Thess 4:5 ESV2011 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;

1Thess 4:6 ESV2011 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.

1Thess 4:7 ESV2011 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.

Paul clearly considers these Thessalonians to be Christians. BUT they had a problem with sexual immorality. And they were messing with each others wives in the Church!

POINT – I can see that stopping our sinning does not come natural. We have to learn to stop it. And that will take some time and effort and prayer and God’s grace and continuing forgiveness.

So they had to understand that this was wrong! And they needed to start learning to resist those sins and do better. But ALL learning takes time.

And sometimes we fall flat on our faces! So we have to get back up and ask God to forgive us and help us to do better. And we keep on walking in faith with our hand in God’s hand.

I don’t think we hear enough about this in the Church.

Eph 4:13 ESV2011 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

Eph 4:14 ESV2011 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

Eph 4:15 ESV2011 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

We continue grow up in every way into the fullness of Christ.

Phil 3:12 ESV2011 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

Phil 3:13 ESV2011 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

Phil 3:14 ESV2011 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Now even Paul the Apostle knew that he had not yet gotten to perfection!

So he also forgot what was behind and kept on doing his best to move closer to Christ! He aimed for that upward call of God when Jesus comes for His Church!

Heb 10:14 ESV2011 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Now look at this verse (Hebrews 10:14) – Jesus single offering of Himself on that cross for sins has perfected us for all times! And look – we are being sanctified.

The previous verses have shown us that we are fully perfect yet.

But with God’s help and patience with us we will when Jesus comes and calls us up in Him!

Now that is Good News!

¡Sed perfectos! ¡No os dejéis guiar por los deseos de la carne! ¿Cómo podemos lograrlo?

Matt 5:48 RVG10 Sed, pues, vosotros perfectos, como vuestro Padre que está en el cielo es perfecto.

Rom 8:1 RVG10 Ahora, pues, ninguna condenación hay para los que están en Cristo Jesús, los que no andan conforme a la carne, sino conforme al Espíritu.

Rom 8:8 RVG10 Así que, los que están en la carne no pueden agradar a Dios.

Todos hemos oído esto en la iglesia. ¡Predicaciones sobre el fuego del infierno y el azufre! Nada realmente práctico. Ninguna idea sobre cómo Dios nos acepta y nos ayuda a lo largo de nuestra vida. Ningún aliento. Poca gracia y paz.

¡Los primeros cristianos tampoco eran perfectos! ¡Estaban lejos de serlo!

Pablo tuvo que enseñarles a dejar de cometer esos pecados persistentes en sus vidas.

¡Pero aun así se les consideraba cristianos!

1Cor 3:3 RVG10 porque aún sois carnales; pues habiendo entre vosotros celos, y contiendas, y divisiones, ¿no sois carnales, y andáis como hombres?

Un cristiano. Pero todavía en la carne.

Eph 5:3 RVG10 Pero fornicación y toda inmundicia, o avaricia, ni aun se nombre entre vosotros como conviene a santos;

Eph 5:4 RVG10 ni palabras obscenas, ni necedades, ni truhanerías, que no convienen; sino antes bien acciones de gracias.

Eph 5:8 RVG10 Porque en otro tiempo erais tinieblas, mas ahora sois luz en el Señor: Andad como hijos de luz

Estos santos —los cristianos— necesitaban poner fin a esta inmoralidad.

¡Necesitaban comportarse como cristianos que viven a la luz de Dios!

Col 3:5 RVG10 Haced morir, pues, vuestros miembros que están en la tierra; fornicación, impureza, pasiones desordenadas, mala concupiscencia y avaricia, que es idolatría;

Col 3:6 RVG10 cosas por las cuales viene la ira de Dios sobre los hijos de desobediencia;

Col 3:7 RVG10 en las cuales también vosotros anduvisteis en otro tiempo cuando vivíais en ellas.

Col 3:8 RVG10 Mas ahora dejad también vosotros todas estas cosas; ira, enojo, malicia, blasfemia, palabras sucias de vuestra boca.

Col 3:9 RVG10 No mintáis los unos a los otros, habiéndoos despojado del viejo hombre con sus hechos;

Observen que Pablo dice que antes practicaban estos pecados, lo que significa que en el pasado no eran creyentes y vivían de esta manera de forma natural, sin intentar cambiar. No conocían otra forma de vida. Pero ahora son cristianos. Por lo tanto, necesitan aprender a dejar de hacer estas cosas. ¡Y dejar de hacerlo no fue fácil para ellos! ¡Y tampoco será fácil para nosotros!

1Thess 4:3 RVG10 Porque ésta es la voluntad de Dios, vuestra santificación; que os abstengáis de fornicación;

1Thess 4:4 RVG10 que cada uno de vosotros sepa tener su vaso en santificación y honor;

1Thess 4:5 RVG10 no en pasión de concupiscencia, como los gentiles que no conocen a Dios.

1Thess 4:6 RVG10 Que ninguno agravie ni tome ventaja de su hermano, en nada; porque el Señor es vengador de todo esto, como ya os hemos dicho y protestado.

1Thess 4:7 RVG10 Porque no nos ha llamado Dios a inmundicia, sino a santificación.

Pablo claramente consideraba a estos tesalonicenses como cristianos. PERO tenían un problema con la inmoralidad sexual. ¡Y se estaban metiendo con las esposas de los demás en la iglesia!

El punto es que dejar de pecar no es algo que nos salga de forma natural. Tenemos que aprender a dejar de hacerlo. Y eso requiere tiempo, esfuerzo, oración, la gracia de Dios y su perdón continuo.

Así que tenían que entender que esto estaba mal. Y necesitaban empezar a aprender a resistir esos pecados y a comportarse mejor. Pero todo aprendizaje lleva tiempo.

¡Y a veces nos caemos de bruces! Así que tenemos que levantarnos, pedirle perdón a Dios y pedirle que nos ayude a mejorar. Y seguimos caminando en fe, de la mano de Dios.

No creo que se hable lo suficiente de esto en la iglesia.

Eph 4:13 RVG10 hasta que todos lleguemos en la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a un varón perfecto, a la medida de la estatura de la plenitud de Cristo;

Eph 4:14 RVG10 para que ya no seamos niños fluctuantes, llevados por doquiera de todo viento de doctrina, por estratagema de hombres que para engañar emplean con astucia las artimañas del error.

Eph 4:15 RVG10 Antes hablando la verdad en amor, crezcamos en todas las cosas, en Aquél que es la cabeza, en Cristo;

Seguimos creciendo en todos los sentidos hasta alcanzar la plenitud de Cristo.

Phil 3:12 RVG10 No que lo haya ya alcanzado, ni que ya sea perfecto, mas prosigo para ver si alcanzo aquello para lo cual también fui alcanzado por Cristo Jesús.

Phil 3:13 RVG10 Hermanos, yo mismo no pretendo haberlo ya alcanzado; pero una cosa hago: olvidando ciertamente lo que queda atrás, y extendiéndome a lo que está adelante,

Phil 3:14 RVG10 prosigo al blanco, al premio del supremo llamamiento de Dios en Cristo Jesús.

¡Incluso el apóstol Pablo sabía que aún no había alcanzado la perfección!

Por eso, olvidando lo que quedaba atrás, siguió esforzándose al máximo para acercarse más a Cristo. ¡Anhelaba el llamamiento celestial de Dios para cuando Jesús venga por su Iglesia!

Heb 10:14 RVG10 Porque con una sola ofrenda hizo perfectos para siempre a los santificados.

Ahora miren este versículo (Hebreos 10:14): ¡La única ofrenda que Jesús hizo de sí mismo en la cruz por nuestros pecados nos ha perfeccionado para siempre! Y miren: estamos siendo santificados.

Los versículos anteriores nos han mostrado que aún no somos completamente perfectos.

Pero con la ayuda y la paciencia de Dios, lo seremos cuando Jesús venga y nos lleve con Él.

¡Eso sí que son buenas noticias!
