Sometimes even the strongest Believer just feels like running away!
1Kgs 19:1 WEBBE Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
1Kgs 19:2 WEBBE Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don’t make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!”
1Kgs 19:3 WEBBE When he saw that, he arose, and ran for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
1Kgs 19:4 WEBBE But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”
Now Elijah just had his greatest triumph of faith over the idolatry in Israel.
But Jezebel sent this message – Elijah . . you’ll be like those prophets this time tomorrow!
So Elijah panicked! He ran to save himself! Do you blame him?
He ran from Jezreel (in the North of Israel) to Beersheba (in the South of Judah).
Google AI says this was around 95 to 120 miles! Taking maybe some three days?
My goodness! Elijah really ran for it!
Then he sat down and asked the Lord to just let him die!
He’s had a good run for the Lord . . destroyed a lot of bad guys . . and now it’s time to cross on over to the other side . . At least, that’s what Elijah thinks at the moment.
THOUGHT – Even a strong Believer can have a real time of depression!
Discouragement! You have to be careful in those moments. You can do things you don’t have to. You may put yourself in a place you don’t have to be. You may ask for – even pray sincerely for – things you don’t really want or need!
QUESTIONS – Do you think God wanted Elijah to run from Jezebel?
Was God ready to help Elijah defeat Jezebel?
Was the Lord ready for Elijah to die at that time?

1Kgs 19:5 WEBBE He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!”
1Kgs 19:6 WEBBE He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again.
1Kgs 19:7 WEBBE the LORD’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.”
1Kgs 19:8 WEBBE He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, God’s Mountain.
WOW! Forty days . . Now that wasn’t just regular food.
The Lord really blessed that food and gave Elijah tremendous strength and energy!
So Elijah moves on from there around Beersheba way further South to Horeb – God’s Mountain! It seems to me like the Lord does want him to go there. Where is Mount Horeb? In the Bible it seems that Mount Horeb and Mount Sinai are two different names for the same Holy place. This is where Moses received the Ten Commandments.
Now the traditional view is that Horeb is in the southern Sinai Peninsula, near the modern-day city of Saint Catherine and St. Catherine’s Monastery – Google AI Overview 07-24-26.
So Elijah has travelled an incredible distance!
From Beersheba to Mount Horeb in the Southern Sinai Peninsula is 200 to 250 miles taking the Biblical Route.
1Kgs 19:9 WEBBE He came to a cave there, and camped there; and behold, the LORD’s word came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
1Kgs 19:10 WEBBE He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”
Now the Lord asks – “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
And man Elijah sure tells the Lord all about it!
I kinda like his Determination and Tenacity! And I really like his Individuality too!
Oh and . . Elijah is the only one left standing up for the Lord besides!
And he’s really sure about that!
1Kgs 19:11 WEBBE He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” Behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
1Kgs 19:12 WEBBE After the earthquake a fire passed; but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice.
QUESTION – A still small voice. Why? Is the Lord’s voice here so small because He wants us to listen for Him? We won’t hear Him if we don’t listen carefully for Him?

1Kgs 19:13 WEBBE When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

And Boy Elijah tells the Lord all about it again!
Oh . . and Elijah is still the only one left standing up for the Lord!
And he’s really sure about that!
1Kgs 19:15 WEBBE The LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.
1Kgs 19:16 WEBBE Anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.
1Kgs 19:17 WEBBE He who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill.
1Kgs 19:18 WEBBE Yet I reserved seven thousand in Israel, all the knees of which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.”
So the Lord gives Elijah a few assignments to take care.
Including anointing Elisha as his replacement!
But Elijah lives maybe 7 more years training Elisha per Google AI 07-24-26.
Maybe the Lord knows best when we need to pass over to the other side.
Oh . . and the Lord tells Elijah that He still has 7,000 in Israel who haven’t bowed to Baal!
You know . . Maybe we’re never quite as alone as we think we are . .

¡Así que Elías entró en pánico! ¡Corrió para salvarse! ¿Quién podría culparlo?
Corrió desde Jezreel (en el norte de Israel) hasta Beerseba (en el sur de Judá).

¡El desánimo! Hay que tener cuidado en esos momentos. Puedes llegar a hacer cosas que no deberías. Puedes terminar en un lugar donde no tendrías que estar. ¡Puedes pedir —e incluso orar sinceramente por— cosas que en realidad no quieres ni necesitas!
PREGUNTAS – ¿Creen que Dios quería que Elías huyera de Jezabel?
¿Estaba Dios dispuesto a ayudar a Elías a vencer a Jezabel?
¿Estaba el Señor preparado para que Elías muriera en aquel momento?
¿Qué opinan, amigos?
1Kgs 19:5 RVG10 Y echándose debajo del enebro, se quedó dormido. Y he aquí luego un ángel le tocó, y le dijo: Levántate, come.
1Kgs 19:6 RVG10 Entonces él miró, y he aquí a su cabecera una torta cocida sobre las ascuas, y un vaso de agua: y comió y bebió y se volvió a dormir.
1Kgs 19:7 RVG10 Y volviendo el ángel de Jehová la segunda vez, le tocó y le dijo: Levántate y come, porque la jornada es muy grande para ti.
1Kgs 19:8 RVG10 Se levantó, pues, y comió y bebió; y con la fortaleza de aquella comida caminó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, hasta el monte de Dios, Horeb.
¡Guau! Cuarenta días… Aquello no era comida común y corriente.
¡El Señor realmente bendijo ese alimento y le dio a Elías una fuerza y una energía tremendas!
Así que Elías siguió su camino desde las cercanías de Beerseba —mucho más al sur— hacia Horeb: ¡el monte de Dios! Me parece que el Señor quería que él fuera allí. ¿Dónde está el monte Horeb? En la Biblia, parece que el monte Horeb y el monte Sinaí son dos nombres distintos para el mismo lugar sagrado. Es allí donde Moisés recibió los Diez Mandamientos.
La opinión tradicional sitúa a Horeb en el sur de la península del Sinaí, cerca de la actual ciudad de Santa Catalina y del monasterio de Santa Catalina (según el resumen de IA de Google, 24/07/26).
¡De modo que Elías recorrió una distancia increíble!

Me gusta su determinación y su tenacidad. ¡Y también me gusta mucho su individualidad!
Ah, y además… ¡Elías es el único que queda defendiendo al Señor!
¡Y está muy seguro de ello!
1Kgs 19:11 RVG10 Y él le dijo: Sal fuera, y ponte en el monte delante de Jehová. Y he aquí Jehová que pasaba, y un grande y poderoso viento que rompía los montes, y quebraba las peñas delante de Jehová; pero Jehová no estaba en el viento. Y tras el viento un terremoto; pero Jehová no estaba en el terremoto.
1Kgs 19:12 RVG10 Y tras el terremoto un fuego; pero Jehová no estaba en el fuego. Y tras el fuego una voz suave y delicada.
PREGUNTA – Una voz suave y apacible. ¿Por qué? ¿Es la voz del Señor tan tenue aquí porque Él quiere que estemos atentos para escucharla? ¿Acaso no le oiremos si no escuchamos con atención?
¿Qué opinan ustedes de esto, amigos?
1Kgs 19:13 RVG10 Y al oírla Elías, cubrió su rostro con su manto, y salió, y se paró a la puerta de la cueva. Y he aquí vino una voz a él, diciendo: ¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?
1Kgs 19:14 RVG10 Y él respondió: He sentido un vivo celo por Jehová Dios de los ejércitos; porque los hijos de Israel han dejado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares, y han matado a espada a tus profetas; y sólo yo he quedado, y me buscan para quitarme la vida.
Una vez más, el Señor pregunta: «¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?».
¡Y Elías le cuenta todo al Señor otra vez!

1Kgs 19:15 RVG10 Y le dijo Jehová: Ve, vuelve por tu camino, por el desierto de Damasco: y llegarás, y ungirás a Hazael por rey de Siria;
1Kgs 19:16 RVG10 Y a Jehú hijo de Nimsi, ungirás por rey sobre Israel; y a Eliseo hijo de Safat, de Abel-mehola, ungirás para que sea profeta en tu lugar.
1Kgs 19:17 RVG10 Y será, que el que escapare de la espada de Hazael, Jehú lo matará; y el que escapare de la espada de Jehú, Eliseo lo matará.
1Kgs 19:18 RVG10 Pero yo he hecho que queden en Israel siete mil, cuyas rodillas no se doblaron ante Baal, y cuyas bocas no lo besaron.
Así que el Señor le encomienda a Elías algunas tareas.
¡Incluyendo ungir a Eliseo como su sucesor!
