Idols and Food!

Hi Friends! Here’s A Bible Thought For You.
Some early Christians worried about eating meat that was offered to idols! Some Christians are still today nervous about food in various ways!
I have actually seen Christians arguing in the Church that we should not eat bacon or ham!
1Cor 8:4 ESV2011 Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.”
1Cor 8:7 ESV2011 However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
1Cor 8:8 ESV2011 Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do.
Paul knew that it was just food. And he could eat it. Other Christian’s understood this.
1Cor 8:9 ESV2011 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.
1Cor 8:10 ESV2011 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols?
1Cor 8:11 ESV2011 And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died.
And some early Christian’s took it too far going and eating the meat while it was still at the idol’s temple! That tempted other Christian’s to go back close to idolatry again. And that was clearly a Bad Idea!
1Cor 10:25 ESV2011 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
1Cor 10:26 ESV2011 For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”
Paul said that when the meat was in the market being sold you could go buy it and eat it! We have to eat to live in this life. And God does provide us food!
Paul gives another example. If your invited to dinner by an unbeliever. Go if you want.
1Cor 10:28 ESV2011 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience—
1Cor 10:29 ESV2011 I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience?
1Cor 10:30 ESV2011 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
But if another Christian says that this food was offered to idols, then don’t eat if for the sake of this weaker brother.
NOW Here is a thought – If this weaker brother does this a second time I may accept that. But if they do this a third time I may ask them why they keep on coming to a party that they know offends them. Isn’t that sinning itself? They do need to accept some responsibility and live their own convictions!

Paul talked to the Romans about this also.
Rom 14:1 ESV2011 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.
Rom 14:2 ESV2011 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables.
Rom 14:3 ESV2011 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him.
Look at that – So the one who does not eat this food is supposed to be learning to not judge other Christian’s who do eat it! They aren’t supposed to just stay weak and make everybody support them all their life.
And this matter of doing this or not doing that also even got into the idea of which day was really the Holy Day for we Christian’s.
Rom 14:5 ESV2011 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.
Rom 14:6 ESV2011 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.
And Paul tells them that each has to make up their own mind sincerely!
Rom 14:21 ESV2011 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.
Rom 14:22 ESV2011 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves.
And so we each one do have the right to our own convictions on these matters. In our homes we do have the right to eat what we know is good food.
Know I personally think that these matters continued to be a problem in the early church. And this situation was aggravated by the Jewish men from Jerusalem who came into Paul’s churches when Paul was not there. And taught that Christian’s should be Circumcised and keep points like the Kosher Food Laws at least. We see this part of the problem in Paul’s letter to the Galatians!
Gal 2:11 ESV2011 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.
Gal 2:12 ESV2011 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.
Gal 2:13 ESV2011 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.
Gal 2:14 ESV2011 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
And Boy, Paul really Ripped Cephas (Peter) on his hypocrisy in this very point!
And some even got involved in really Esoteric Jewish or Gnostic ideas of the time. They were becoming early Ascetics, and worshiping angels! We see this in Paul’s letter to the Colossians which was probably written a bit later than the other Epitles we have looked at.
By this Point I personally believe that Paul was tired of all this and he told the Colossians to Flat Refuse to let these people judge them on any longer on these matters of food, and the Holy Days!
Col 2:16 ESV2011 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.
Col 2:17 ESV2011 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
Col 2:18 ESV2011 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,
Col 2:19 ESV2011 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
Col 2:20 ESV2011 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—
Col 2:21 ESV2011 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch”
Col 2:22 ESV2011 ( referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings?
So I suppose that within reason we should Eat, Drink and be Careful (about others).

¡Ídolos y Comida!

Hola amigos! Aquí tienes un pensamiento bíblico para ti.
¡A algunos cristianos primitivos les preocupaba comer carne ofrecida a los ídolos! ¡Algunos cristianos aún hoy se preocupan por la comida de diversas maneras! ¡De hecho he visto a cristianos discutiendo en la Iglesia que no deberíamos comer tocino ni jamón!
1Cor 8:4 RVG10 Y en cuanto a comer de aquello que es sacrificado a los ídolos, sabemos que el ídolo nada es en el mundo, y que no hay más que un solo Dios.
1Cor 8:7 RVG10 Pero no en todos hay este conocimiento; porque algunos con conciencia del ídolo hasta ahora, comen como sacrificado a ídolos; y su conciencia, siendo débil, se contamina.
1Cor 8:8 RVG10 Si bien el alimento no nos hace más aceptos a Dios; pues ni porque comamos, seremos más; ni porque no comamos, seremos menos.
Pablo sabía que era solo comida. Y podía comerla. Otros cristianos lo entendían.
1Cor 8:9 RVG10 Mas mirad que esta vuestra libertad de ninguna manera venga a ser tropezadero a los que son débiles.
1Cor 8:10 RVG10 Porque si te ve alguno a ti, que tienes conocimiento, sentado a la mesa en el templo de los ídolos, la conciencia de aquel que es débil, ¿no será incitada a comer de lo sacrificado a los ídolos?
1Cor 8:11 RVG10 Y por tu conocimiento se perderá el hermano débil por el cual Cristo murió.
Y algunos cristianos primitivos se pasaron de la raya al comer la carne mientras aún estaba en el templo del ídolo. Eso tentó a otros cristianos a volver a caer en la idolatría. ¡Y eso fue claramente una mala idea!
1Cor 10:25 RVG10 De todo lo que se vende en la carnicería, comed, sin preguntar nada por causa de la conciencia;
1Cor 10:26 RVG10 porque del Señor es la tierra y su plenitud.
Pablo dijo que cuando la carne se vendía en el mercado, ¡podías ir a comprarla y comerla! Tenemos que comer para vivir en esta vida. ¡Y Dios nos provee de alimento!
Pablo da otro ejemplo: Si un incrédulo te invita a cenar, ve si quieres.
1Cor 10:28 RVG10 Pero si alguien os dice: Esto fue sacrificado a los ídolos; no lo comáis, por causa de aquel que lo declaró, y por causa de la conciencia; porque del Señor es la tierra y su plenitud.
1Cor 10:29 RVG10 La conciencia, digo, no la tuya, sino la del otro. Pues ¿por qué se ha de juzgar mi libertad por la conciencia de otro?
1Cor 10:30 RVG10 Y si yo con agradecimiento participo, ¿por qué he de ser difamado por lo que doy gracias?
Pero si otro cristiano dice que esta comida fue ofrecida a los ídolos, entonces no la coman por amor a este hermano más débil.
Ahora bien, aquí va una reflexión: si este hermano más débil lo hace una segunda vez, puedo aceptarlo. Pero si lo hace una tercera vez, puedo preguntarle por qué sigue viniendo a una fiesta que sabe que le ofende. ¿No es eso mismo pecar? ¡Deben asumir cierta responsabilidad y vivir según sus propias convicciones!
PREGUNTA: ¿Qué opinan de eso, amigos?
Pablo también habló de esto con los romanos.
Rom 14:1 RVG10 Recibid al débil en la fe, pero no para contender sobre opiniones.
Rom 14:2 RVG10 Porque uno cree que se ha de comer de todo, otro, que es débil, come legumbres.
Rom 14:3 RVG10 El que come, no menosprecie al que no come, y el que no come, no juzgue al que come; porque Dios le ha recibido.
Mira eso. Así que quien no come esta comida debería aprender a no juzgar a otros cristianos que sí la comen. No deberían simplemente ser débiles y dejar que todos los apoyen toda su vida.
Y este asunto de hacer esto o no hacer aquello incluso influyó en la idea de qué día era realmente el Día Sagrado para nosotros los cristianos.
Rom 14:5 RVG10 Uno hace diferencia entre un día y otro; otro juzga iguales todos los días. Cada uno esté plenamente seguro en su propia mente.
Rom 14:6 RVG10 El que hace caso del día, para el Señor lo hace; y el que no hace caso del día, para el Señor no lo hace. El que come, para el Señor come, porque da gracias a Dios; y el que no come, para el Señor no come, y da gracias a Dios.
¡Y Pablo les dice que cada uno debe tomar su propia decisión con sinceridad!
Rom 14:21 RVG10 Bueno es no comer carne, ni beber vino, ni nada en que tu hermano tropiece, o se ofenda, o sea debilitado.
Rom 14:22 RVG10 ¿Tienes tú fe? Tenla para contigo delante de Dios. Bienaventurado el que no se condena a sí mismo con lo que aprueba.
Bienaventurado el que no tiene por qué juzgarse a sí mismo por lo que aprueba.
Así que cada uno de nosotros tiene derecho a tener sus propias convicciones sobre estos asuntos. En nuestros hogares tenemos derecho a comer lo que sabemos que es buena comida.
Sé que, personalmente, creo que estos asuntos siguieron siendo un problema en la iglesia primitiva. Y esta situación se agravó con los hombres judíos de Jerusalén que iban a las iglesias de Pablo cuando él no estaba. Y enseñaban que los cristianos debían circuncidarse y, al menos, observar puntos como las Leyes de Alimentación Kosher. ¡Vemos esta parte del problema en la carta de Pablo a los Gálatas!
Gal 2:11 RVG10 Pero cuando Pedro vino a Antioquía, le resistí en su cara, porque era de condenar.
Gal 2:12 RVG10 Porque antes que viniesen unos de parte de Jacobo, él comía con los gentiles, mas cuando vinieron, se retraía y se apartaba, teniendo miedo de los que eran de la circuncisión.
Gal 2:13 RVG10 Y otros judíos también disimulaban con él; de tal manera que también Bernabé fue llevado con su simulación.
Gal 2:14 RVG10 Pero cuando vi que no andaban rectamente conforme a la verdad del evangelio, dije a Pedro delante de todos: Si tú, siendo judío, vives como los gentiles y no como los judíos, ¿por qué obligas a los gentiles a judaizar?
¡Y vaya si Pablo criticó duramente a Pedro por su hipocresía en este preciso punto!
Algunos incluso se involucraron en ideas judías o gnósticas muy esotéricas de la época. ¡Se estaban convirtiendo en ascetas primitivos y adorando ángeles! Vemos esto en la carta de Pablo a los Colosenses, que probablemente fue escrita un poco después de las otras epístolas que hemos visto.
En este punto, personalmente creo que Pablo estaba cansado de todo esto y les dijo a los colosenses que se negaran rotundamente a permitir que esta gente los juzgara más en asuntos de comida y días festivos.
Col 2:16 RVG10 Por tanto, nadie os juzgue en comida o en bebida, o respecto a días de fiesta o de luna nueva, o de sábados;
Col 2:17 RVG10 que son la sombra de lo por venir; mas el cuerpo es de Cristo.
Col 2:18 RVG10 Nadie os prive de vuestra recompensa, afectando humildad y adoración a los ángeles, entremetiéndose en lo que no ha visto, vanamente hinchado por su propia mente carnal,
Col 2:19 RVG10 y no asiéndose de la cabeza, de la cual todo el cuerpo, nutrido y enlazado por las coyunturas y los ligamentos, crece con el crecimiento de Dios.
Col 2:20 RVG10 Si habéis muerto con Cristo en cuanto a los rudimentos del mundo, ¿por qué, entonces, como si vivieseis en el mundo, os sometéis a ordenanzas
Col 2:21 RVG10 tales como: No toques, no gustes, no manejes
Col 2:22 RVG10 (todas las cuales habrán de perecer con el uso), según mandamientos y doctrinas de hombres?
Así que supongo que, dentro de lo razonable, deberíamos Comer, Beber y tener Cuidado (con los demás).
