Don’t let the day of the Lord overtake you!

The day of the Lord.
Paul see sees the day of the Lord as the time as when God rains down judgments on this earth.
1Thess 5:2 AKJV/PCE For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
1Thess 5:3 AKJV/PCE For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
2 The day of the Lord comes unexpectedly.
1Thess 5:4 AKJV/PCE But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
1Thess 5:5 AKJV/PCE Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
1Thess 5:6 AKJV/PCE Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
4-6 We must not be careless in our Christian lives.
Don’t let that day of the Lord overtake = seize, possess us!
Paul says that we need to watch and be sober.
But what do we watch for?
We watch for Jesus coming to take us up BEFORE that day of the Lord comes!
1Thess 5:7 AKJV/PCE For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
This is how the unbelievers live.
1Thess 5:8 AKJV/PCE But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
Now we Christians are of the day. We’re in the light. See Ephesians 5:8.
We are Saved. WE have faith and love.
And we have a hope – a promise – of being with our Savior one day!

Paul tells the Thessalonians in the previous chapter 4 that we will go up to meet Christ.
1Thess 4:16 AKJV/PCE For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Thess 4:17 AKJV/PCE Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
This catching up to the Lord is called the day of Jesus Christ in Philippians 1:16.
There Paul tells the Philippians that we can be confident that God will continue the good work of making us better Christians until that day of Jesus Christ.
Phil 1:6 AKJV/PCE Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
So that MUST be the day that Jesus comes to catch us up to Him.
1Thess 5:9 AKJV/PCE For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
REMEMBER – Paul is talking about we Christians not being surprised by the day of the Lord.
And the day of the Lord is associated with judgments and God’s wrath coming down on this earth.
So Paul is saying that we Christians don’t have to suffer through that wrath of God.
God Has NOT appointed = placed us in position to have to go through that day!!
God Has Placed us in position to obtain = acquire salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ as He comes to catch us up to Himself!
That is the Point that Paul has been making to us since verse 4 above!
Don’t be overtaken = seized, possessed by that day of the Lord.
We don’t have to go through it.
Unless your just lazy, rebellious and want to do a lot of extra suffering . . .
I personally don’t . . . but that’s just me . . .
NOTE – Paul’s context and meaning are pretty clear through this whole passage!
1Thess 5:10 AKJV/PCE Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
Now Paul can’t be telling us that we can go ahead and sleep spiritually and not be faithful to Christ and still be caught up to Him.
Robertson’s Word Pictures says this “wake or sleep” is “Used here of life and death . . .”.
That fits perfectly with what Paul says about those dead in the faith going up to Christ first and we still alive and believing going right behind them. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17!
All we Christians Believers will go up to meet Christ in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17 Read It!).
1Thess 5:11 AKJV/PCE Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
Now here . . . Look at this. Paul says that what he has just explained to us here is something we will ALL be encouraged about.
It wouldn’t be encouraging to be told that we are going through the time when God’s judgments and wrath are falling down on this earth.
It would be very encouraging to know that God will continuing His good work in us until the day that Jesus comes to catch us up to be with Him!!

¡No dejes que el día del Señor te alcance!

El día del Señor.
Pablo ve el día del Señor como el momento en que Dios hace llover juicios sobre esta tierra.
1Thess 5:2 RVG10 Porque vosotros sabéis perfectamente que el día del Señor vendrá como ladrón en la noche,
1Thess 5:3 RVG10 que cuando digan: Paz y seguridad, entonces vendrá sobre ellos destrucción repentina, como los dolores a la mujer que da a luz; y no escaparán.
2 El día del Señor llega inesperadamente.
1Thess 5:4 RVG10 Mas vosotros, hermanos, no estáis en tinieblas, para que aquel día os sorprenda como ladrón.
1Thess 5:5 RVG10 Porque todos vosotros sois hijos de luz, e hijos del día; no somos de la noche, ni de las tinieblas.
1Thess 5:6 RVG10 Por tanto, no durmamos como los demás; antes velemos y seamos sobrios.
4-6 No debemos ser descuidados en nuestra vida cristiana.
¡No dejes que ese día del Señor nos alcance = apoderémonos, poseyéndonos!
Pablo dice que debemos velar y ser sobrios.
¿Pero qué estamos atentos?
¡Esperamos que Jesús venga a llevarnos ANTES de que llegue ese día del Señor!
1Thess 5:7 RVG10 Porque los que duermen, de noche duermen; y los que se embriagan, de noche se embriagan.
Así es como viven los incrédulos.
1Thess 5:8 RVG10 Pero nosotros, que somos del día, seamos sobrios, vestidos de la coraza de fe y amor, y de la esperanza de salvación, como un yelmo.
Ahora nosotros los cristianos somos del día. Estamos en la luz. Véase Efesios 5:8.
Somos salvos. Tenemos fe y amor.
¡Y tenemos la esperanza – una promesa – de estar con nuestro Salvador algún día!

Pablo les dice a los Tesalonicenses en el capítulo 4 anterior que subiremos al encuentro de Cristo.
1Thess 4:16 RVG10 Porque el Señor mismo con aclamación, con voz de arcángel, y con trompeta de Dios, descenderá del cielo; y los muertos en Cristo resucitarán primero.
1Thess 4:17 RVG10 Luego nosotros los que vivimos, los que hayamos quedado, juntamente con ellos seremos arrebatados en las nubes para recibir al Señor en el aire, y así estaremos siempre con el Señor.
Este alcanzar al Señor se llama el día de Jesucristo en Filipenses 1:16.
Allí Pablo les dice a los filipenses que podemos estar seguros de que Dios continuará la buena obra de hacernos mejores cristianos hasta ese día de Jesucristo.
Phil 1:6 RVG10 estando confiado de esto, que el que comenzó en vosotros la buena obra, la perfeccionará hasta el día de Jesucristo.
Entonces DEBE ser el día en que Jesús venga a alcanzarnos para Él.
1Thess 5:9 RVG10 Porque no nos ha puesto Dios para ira, sino para obtener salvación por nuestro Señor Jesucristo;
RECUERDE – Pablo está hablando de que nosotros los cristianos no nos sorprendamos por el día del Señor.
Y el día del Señor está asociado con los juicios y la ira de Dios que desciende sobre esta tierra.
Entonces Pablo está diciendo que nosotros los cristianos no tenemos que sufrir esa ira de Dios.
¡¡Dios NO nos ha designado = nos ha colocado en posición de tener que pasar por ese día!!
¡Dios nos ha puesto en posición de obtener = adquirir la salvación por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo cuando Él viene a alcanzarnos para sí mismo!
¡Ese es el punto que Pablo nos ha estado señalando desde el versículo 4 anterior!
No os dejéis alcanzar = apresados, poseídos por aquel día del Señor.
No tenemos que pasar por eso.
A menos que simplemente seas vago, rebelde y quieras sufrir mucho más. . .
Yo personalmente no. . . pero ese soy solo yo. . .
NOTA: ¡El contexto y el significado de Pablo son bastante claros en todo este pasaje!
1Thess 5:10 RVG10 quien murió por nosotros, para que ya sea que velemos, o que durmamos, vivamos juntamente con Él.
Ahora bien, Pablo no puede decirnos que podemos seguir adelante y dormir espiritualmente y no ser fieles a Cristo y aun así ser arrebatados a Él.
Word Pictures de Robertson dice que “vigilar o dormir” se “usa aquí para referirse a la vida o la muerte. . .”.
Eso encaja perfectamente con lo que dice Pablo acerca de que los muertos en la fe van primero a Cristo y nosotros, todavía vivos y creyentes, vamos detrás de ellos. ¡Lea 1 Tesalonicenses 4:16-17!
Todos los cristianos Creyentes subiremos al encuentro de Cristo en el aire (1 Tesalonicenses 4:17 ¡Léelo!).
1Thess 5:11 RVG10 Por lo cual, consolaos unos a otros, y edificaos unos a otros, así como lo hacéis.
En ningún lugar . . . Mira esto. Pablo dice que lo que nos acaba de explicar aquí es algo que TODOS nos animaremos.
No sería alentador que nos dijeran que estamos pasando por una época en la que los juicios y la ira de Dios están cayendo sobre esta tierra.
¡¡Sería muy alentador saber que Dios continuará Su buena obra en nosotros hasta el día en que Jesús venga a alcanzarnos para estar con Él!!
