The Shadow of Death
Ps 23:1 AKJV/PCE A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Ps 23:2 AKJV/PCE He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
The story starts out sounding so beautiful.
The Lord is his shepherd, his teacher.
And the Lord is going to provide for him.
He won’t be in want for food, clothes, the things we have to have in life.
This is language David could readily understand.
In his youth, he was a shepherd. He tended his father’s sheep.
Once a lion came and took a lamb away.
It seems another time a bear came and stole a lamb.
And both times David went after them and got the sheep back!
He was just a young man.
In 1 Samuel 17 David tells the story –
1Sam 17:34 AKJV/PCE And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
1Sam 17:35 AKJV/PCE And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
1Sam 17:36 AKJV/PCE Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
A lion, and a bear. And he hit them and got the lamb back!
And if they tried to attack him David grabbed them by their beard and hit them so hard that he killed them!
That is some kind of nerve to face down a lion or a bear.
Just for a lamb. And it sounds like he killed them with his staff . . Just a staff!
David was a strong willed and determined man. And he seemed to really believe that God was with him. And that God would protect him. He was certain of it.
In these first verses of Psalm 23 David sees those beautiful green pasture lands with calm water for the sheep. Beautiful provision. What you need for life.
Ps 23:3 AKJV/PCE He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Perhaps a bit later in his life he has some hard situations.
Things have not gone well. David may have done some wrong things.
Because the Lord restores him, He renews him.
When I read this David’s time with Bathsheba comes to mind.
The Lord leads him in right ways. The Lord teaches him to do the right things.
In verse 4 the Lord’s rod and staff comfort David.
They could be used to defend the sheep from enemies . . like that lion and the bear!
And the crook in the staff could pull a wandering sheep back from disaster.
And David may have experienced that.
Ps 23:4 AKJV/PCE Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
The shadow of death.
Here we may be getting to the heart of Psalm 23.
It is a hard time in David’s life. Perhaps his hardest.
Danger is there. He thinks he is facing death!
He’s not certain that he’s going to make it.
This may have been the darkest hour of David’s life . .
Some wonder if this was when David’s son Absalom rose up an insurrection to take the throne.
And King David, and his loyal followers had to flee for their lives.
But David declares that he “will fear no evil”.
Sometimes that is so easy to say . . and then so hard to do.
David is grief stricken. Perhaps thinking about his son Absalom and the battle.
But in this agonizing moment, he is aware that the Lord is with him.
He is certain that the Lord will help him.
Davis always seemed to be aware of this presence of the Lord.
Ps 23:5 AKJV/PCE Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
He knows that the Lord will prepare a feast for him – right in front of his enemies!
He David will be able to feast, while the Lord fights against his enemies.
He is anointed, and honored with oil pouring over his head.
His cup is full of wine and running over the edge.
David is certain that, even in this time of the shadow of death, the Lord will fight for him.
He will win the battle because the Lord is with him.
And the Lord will renew him and bless him.
Ps 23:6 AKJV/PCE Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
God’s good, pleasant, agreeable kindness, and His good kind faithfulness will follow David through out all of his life. They will truly run after him!
Such faith . .
As for David, he will be in the Lord’s house for ever.
Amen.
And God will help us Friends. And we Shall survive that shadow of death also!
Believe it and declare it whether you feel it or not!
God is with you and me. He will fight this battle for us and we will win it!

Aquí tienes un pensamiento sobre Historia/línea bíblica.
La sombra de la muerte
Ps 23:1 RVG10 «Salmo de David.» Jehová es mi pastor; nada me faltará.
Ps 23:2 RVG10 En lugares de delicados pastos me hará descansar; junto a aguas de reposo me pastoreará.
La historia comienza sonando muy hermosa.
El Señor es su pastor, su maestro.
Y el Señor va a proveer para él.
No le faltará comida, ropa, las cosas que tenemos que tener en la vida.
Éste es un lenguaje que David podía entender fácilmente.
En su juventud fue pastor. Cuidó las ovejas de su padre.
Una vez vino un león y se llevó un cordero.
Parece que otra vez vino un oso y robó un cordero.
¡Y en ambas ocasiones David fue tras ellos y recuperó las ovejas!
Era sólo un joven.
En 1 Samuel 17, David cuenta la historia:
1Sam 17:34 RVG10 Y David respondió a Saúl: Tu siervo era pastor de las ovejas de su padre, y cuando venía un león, o un oso, y tomaba algún cordero del rebaño,
1Sam 17:35 RVG10 yo salía tras él, y lo hería, y lo libraba de su boca; y si se levantaba contra mí, yo lo tomaba por la quijada, y lo hería y lo mataba.
1Sam 17:36 RVG10 Tu siervo mató tanto al león, como al oso; y este filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha provocado al ejército del Dios viviente.
Un león y un oso. ¡Y los golpeó y recuperó el cordero!
¡Y si intentaban atacarlo, David los agarró por la barba y los golpeó tan fuerte que los mató!
Es una especie de descaro enfrentarse a un león o un oso.
Sólo por un cordero. Y parece que los mató con su bastón. . ¡Solo un bastón!
David era un hombre fuerte y decidido. Y parecía creer realmente que Dios estaba con él. Y que Dios lo protegería. Estaba seguro de ello.
En estos primeros versículos del Salmo 23, David ve esos hermosos pastizales verdes con aguas tranquilas para las ovejas. Hermosa provisión. Lo que necesitas para la vida.
Ps 23:3 RVG10 Restaurará mi alma; me guiará por sendas de justicia por amor de su nombre.
Quizás un poco más adelante en su vida tenga algunas situaciones difíciles.
Las cosas no han ido bien. Es posible que David haya hecho algunas cosas malas.
Porque el Señor lo restaura, lo renueva.
Cuando leo esto me viene a la mente el tiempo de David con Betsabé.
El Señor lo guía por caminos rectos. El Señor le enseña a hacer las cosas correctas.
En el versículo 4, la vara y el cayado del Señor consuelan a David.
Podrían usarse para defender a las ovejas de los enemigos. . ¡Como ese león y el oso!
Y el cayado del bastón podría rescatar del desastre a una oveja descarriada.
Y es posible que David haya experimentado eso.
Ps 23:4 RVG10 Aunque ande en valle de sombra de muerte, no temeré mal alguno; porque tú estarás conmigo; tu vara y tu cayado me infundirán aliento.
La sombra de la muerte.
Aquí quizás estemos llegando al corazón del Salmo 23.
Es un momento difícil en la vida de David. Quizás el más difícil.
El peligro está ahí. ¡Él piensa que se enfrenta a la muerte!
No está seguro de que vaya a lograrlo.
Esta puede haber sido la hora más oscura de la vida de David. .
Algunos se preguntan si fue entonces cuando Absalón, el hijo de David, se rebeló para tomar el trono.
Y el rey David y sus leales seguidores tuvieron que huir para salvar sus vidas.
Pero David declara que “no temerá ningún mal”.
A veces eso es muy fácil de decir. . y luego tan difícil de hacer.
David está desconsolado. Quizás pensando en su hijo Absalón y la batalla.
Pero en este momento de agonía, es consciente de que el Señor está con él.
Está seguro de que el Señor le ayudará.
Davis siempre pareció estar consciente de esta presencia del Señor.
Ps 23:5 RVG10 Aderezas mesa delante de mí, en presencia de mis angustiadores; unges mi cabeza con aceite; mi copa está rebosando.
Él sabe que el Señor le preparará un banquete, ¡justo frente a sus enemigos!
El David podrá darse un festín, mientras el Señor lucha contra sus enemigos.
Es ungido y honrado con aceite derramado sobre su cabeza.
Su copa está llena de vino y desbordándose.
David está seguro de que, incluso en este tiempo de sombra de muerte, el Señor peleará por él.
Él ganará la batalla porque el Señor está con él.
Y el Señor lo renovará y lo bendecirá.
Ps 23:6 RVG10 Ciertamente el bien y la misericordia me seguirán todos los días de mi vida; y en la casa de Jehová moraré por largos días.
La bondad buena, placentera y agradable de Dios, y su buena y bondadosa fidelidad, seguirán a David durante toda su vida. ¡Realmente correrán tras él!

En cuanto a David, estará en la casa del Señor para siempre.
Amén.
Y Dios nos ayudará Amigos. ¡Y nosotros también sobreviviremos a esa sombra de muerte!
¡Créelo y declaralo lo sientas o no!
Dios está contigo y conmigo. ¡Él peleará esta batalla por nosotros y la ganaremos!
