Here’s a History / Bible Line Thought for you.

Do We Really Turn the Other Cheek?
Well . . .
There are Limits.
Let’s take a look.
These points in Luke 6 are very similar to those in Matthew 5.
NOW Some say that well . . . Luke’s account is in the plain and Matthew’s account in a mountain.
And that in the two Gospels these events have people from different areas of the country coming to hear Jesus teaching.
Well . . . if you look in Luke 6:17 they are coming from the Jerusalem area and from way North in Lebanon! And in Matthew 4:25 we see the people are following Jesus from the Jerusalem area in the South. And from Galilee and Decapolis well North.
Even if these two accounts in Matthew 5 and Luke 6 are at somewhat different times they still are very similar.
I think Friends that we can get insights to help from comparing the two.
Now Luke says this –
Luke 6:28 AKJV/PCE Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
Luke 6:29 AKJV/PCE And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
And let’s look at Matthew –
Matt 5:38 AKJV/PCE ¶ Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
Matt 5:39 AKJV/PCE But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Basic Point – I think there is the Basic Point that you don’t have to return every insult of harm.
Some hurts are embarrassing, insulting, but just not that serious.
You don’t have to run to court for every insult or minor injury.
QUESTIONS – You don’t resist evil . . .
Ever? Any evil? Never ever??
NO! Some evil has to be resisted. Sometimes strongly!
LOOK – Jesus resisted the efforts by some to kill him!
Luke 4:28 ESV2011 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.
Luke 4:29 ESV2011 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.
Luke 4:30 ESV2011 But passing through their midst, he went away.
He didn’t let them kill Him before the time, in the wrong place, and in an incorrect manner. He had to be crucified. These guys wanted to throw Jesus off a cliff!
He walked through the middle of this enraged crowd bunched around Him!
And I am sure that Jesus rubbed shoulders with a few as He walked through the middle of this furious crowd!
Jesus hid among the people it seems and got away from those Jewish Leaders!
John 8:57 AKJV/PCE Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
John 8:58 AKJV/PCE Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
John 8:59 AKJV/PCE Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
SO Jesus Himself resisted evil!
POINT – When we look at other passages about Jesus life we see that Yes There are Limits to Not Resisting Evil!
Turn the Other Cheek?
Yes sometimes.
There are practical limits to this also.
We have the Right of Self Defense!
Jesus Himself gives it to us.
In Fact, Jesus commands us to get a weapon to use in self defense!
Luke 22:35 AKJV/PCE And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
Luke 22:36 AKJV/PCE Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
Jesus sent them out earlier without extra things.
They had to depend on God to give them all.
But now Jesus tells them to take food and money and a weapon with them.
This language is Not Symbolic.
Jesus literal means what He says here!
They will be hungry. Of course!
They will have to buy things. Absolutely!
AND they may have to defend themselves on those dangerous roads! Yes true!!
Likewise we are commanded to prepare for our needs in the same way!
POINT – So there are Limits to letting someone hit you.
An Insult is one thing.
But Trying to kill you, your family, or other innocents is a whole different situation!!

Hay límites.
Echemos un vistazo.
Estos puntos de Lucas 6 son muy similares a los de Mateo 5.
AHORA Algunos lo dicen bien. . . El relato de Lucas está en la llanura y el relato de Mateo en una montaña.
Y que en los dos evangelios estos eventos tienen personas de diferentes áreas del país viniendo a escuchar las enseñanzas de Jesús.
Bien . . . Si miras en Lucas 6:17, ¡vienen del área de Jerusalén y del norte del Líbano! Y en Mateo 4:25 vemos que la gente sigue a Jesús desde el área de Jerusalén en el sur. Y de Galilea y Decápolis bien al Norte.
Incluso si estos dos relatos en Mateo 5 y Lucas 6 son en momentos algo diferentes, todavía son muy similares.
Creo, amigos, que podemos obtener ideas que nos ayuden al comparar los dos.
Ahora Luke dice esto:
Luke 6:28 RVG10 Bendecid a los que os maldicen, y orad por los que os calumnian.
Luke 6:29 RVG10 Y al que te hiriere en una mejilla, dale también la otra; y al que te quitare la capa, no le impidas llevar aun la túnica.
Y miremos a Mateo…
Matt 5:38 RVG10 Oísteis que fue dicho: Ojo por ojo, y diente por diente.
Matt 5:39 RVG10 Pero yo os digo: No resistáis el mal; antes a cualquiera que te hiera en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra;
Punto básico: creo que existe el punto básico de que no tienes que devolver cada insulto o daño.
Algunas heridas son vergonzosas, insultantes, pero no tan graves.
No es necesario acudir a los tribunales por cada insulto o lesión menor.
PREGUNTAS – No se resiste al mal. . .
¿Alguna vez? ¿Algún mal? ¿Nunca jamás?
¡NO! Hay que resistir algún mal. ¡A veces con fuerza!
MIRA – ¡Jesús resistió los esfuerzos de algunos por matarlo!
Luke 4:28 RVG10 Y cuando oyeron estas cosas, todos en la sinagoga se llenaron de ira;
Luke 4:29 RVG10 y levantándose, le echaron fuera de la ciudad, y le llevaron hasta la cumbre del monte sobre el cual la ciudad de ellos estaba edificada, para despeñarle.
Luke 4:30 RVG10 Pero Él, pasando por en medio de ellos, se fue.
Él no permitió que lo mataran antes de tiempo, en el lugar equivocado y de manera incorrecta. Tuvo que ser crucificado. ¡Estos tipos querían tirar a Jesús por un precipicio!
¡Caminó en medio de esta multitud enfurecida que se apiñaba a su alrededor!
¡Y estoy seguro de que Jesús se codeó con algunos mientras caminaba en medio de esta multitud furiosa!
¡Parece que Jesús se escondió entre la gente y se alejó de esos líderes judíos!
John 8:57 RVG10 Le dijeron entonces los judíos: Aún no tienes cincuenta años, ¿y has visto a Abraham?
John 8:58 RVG10 Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Antes que Abraham fuese, yo soy.
John 8:59 RVG10 Entonces tomaron piedras para arrojárselas; pero Jesús se encubrió, y salió del templo atravesando por en medio de ellos, y así pasó.
¡ASÍ que Jesús mismo resistió el mal!
PUNTO – Cuando miramos otros pasajes sobre la vida de Jesús, vemos que ¡Sí, hay límites para no resistir el mal!
¿Poner la otra mejilla?
Sí a veces.
Esto también tiene límites prácticos.
¡Tenemos Derecho a la Autodefensa!
Jesús mismo nos lo da.
De hecho, ¡Jesús nos ordena que consigamos un arma para usarla en defensa propia!
Luke 22:35 RVG10 Y a ellos dijo: Cuando os envié sin bolsa, y sin alforja, y sin zapatos, ¿os faltó algo? Y ellos dijeron: Nada.
Luke 22:36 RVG10 Entonces les dijo: Pues ahora, el que tiene bolsa, tómela, y también la alforja, y el que no tiene espada, venda su capa y compre una.
Jesús los envió antes sin cosas extra.
Tenían que depender de Dios para que les diera todo.
Pero ahora Jesús les dice que se lleven comida, dinero y un arma.
Este lenguaje no es simbólico.
¡Jesús literal significa lo que dice aquí!
Tendrán hambre. ¡Por supuesto!
Tendrán que comprar cosas. ¡Absolutamente!
¡Y es posible que tengan que defenderse en esos caminos peligrosos! Si cierto!!
¡De la misma manera se nos ordena prepararnos para nuestras necesidades de la misma manera!
PUNTO – Entonces, hay límites a la hora de dejar que alguien te golpee.
Un insulto es una cosa.
¡¡Pero intentar matarte a ti, a tu familia o a otros inocentes es una situación completamente diferente!!
¿Están de acuerdo amigos?
